Fire up the grill and get ready to save some energy! This week on Bloomberg West we introduce you to Thermoceramix, a Montreal-based company that has developed an innovative heating technology. Thermoceramix created a sprayable coating that generates electric heat. They hope to implement their technology on a larger scale, but right now they're testing it on a common household item--the barbecue grill. Instead of using typical electric heating coils to warm up the grill, the coating is sprayed on the underside of the grill. When an electrical current runs through the coating, it generates heat Because the coating has little mass, it heats up much faster than a traditional coil. The heat is direct and EXTREMELY hot, making it more energy efficient. The company is aiming to get their grill on the market by next summer. By automating their process, Thermoceramix hopes to reduce their costs so their technology can be put to use in large industries, such as mining, oil, and gas.
