Cultivating A Lifelong Passion For The Soil

After retiring from professional basketball at the age of 28, Will Allen reconnected with his love of farming and founded Growing Power, an organization devoted to providing healthy soil to urban areas, allowing people to grow their own nutritious, organic food. Through Growing Power, Allen hopes to reconnect people with what he calls “good food”, and ultimately combat the spread of urban food deserts.

In order to produce quality food in urban areas, Allen combines time-tested agricultural methods with contemporary innovations. By combining recent developments like vertical grow houses with established techniques like aquaponics and composting, Growing Power is able to grow and maintain approximately 20,000 plants on its two-acre plot in Milwaukee, WI.

Allen’s story highlights both current developments as well as technologies developed hundreds of years ago. By modernizing old methods, Allen has helped smaller community organizations become more sustainable.
