Gina McCarthy, the administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, spoke about sustainability, and the complexity of the issue at Planet Forward’s 2016 Summit.
“The environment opens up opportunities, and you have to look at it as an integrated thought process,” she said. “That’s what sustainability is.”
McCarthy then spoke of the EPA, and how the agency looks for opportunities to get bigger departments to invest in cities. For instance, EPA gives small grants for sustainability improvements to make a visible difference in these cities. This is meant to help states embrace a sustainability vision for the world.
“Innovation and creativity creates the dynamic that makes sustainability possible,” McCarthy said. “We’ve got to get the politics out of it and give the people what they want: a world that is sustainable and where mayors can be the leaders of sustainability action.”
