For those energy-generating sites that create electricity but are far from areas that need it: If they have plentiful access to water, they could use the generated electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen, as well as to compress those two gases into containers, or send them along a pipeline to wherever they’re needed. When the hydrogen and oxygen burn together, the only byproduct will be the original water.
