Green infrastructure is defined as “the interconnected network of open spaces and natural areas, such as greenways, wetlands, parks, forest preserves and native plant vegetation, that naturally manages stormwater, reduces flooding risk and improves water quality.” Spokane, Washington, New Orleans, Louisiana, and Alexandria, Virginia are all taking innovative approaches in implementing green infrastructure. Cities are taking an active role in the future of green infrastructure to solve stormwater issues and be more sustainable. In many ways, they represent a model approach for the nation in environmental issues for the present and future.
