So-called "green steel", developed by Professor Veena Sahajwalla, involves making steel out of waste materials such as plastic bags and car tires. The unique technology reduces reliance on coke and coal in electric arc furnace (EAF) steel-making.
The "green steel" project created the ability to recycle waste plastics and waste rubber for making steel. In the process itself, it has shown that the steel making process can also become more energy efficient which lowers electricity consumption. This makes it a win-win when it comes to recycling waste materials and energy consumption in the steel making process.
