Susanna, PF Web Maven How many energy experts does it take to unscrew a light bulb?

Slate writer Daniel Gross is a pretty lucky guy. He’s using the wisdom of the crowd to help him reduce this energy use in his home. It’s part of a larger project by Slate called The Hive, which is using the collective wisdom of their readers to come up with solutions to everyday problems.

Last night, Slate hosted a meeting of energy experts, journalist, bloggers, business… Continue

Susanna, PF Web Maven The Sun Also Sets: A Solution to the Intermittency Problem?

The world’s second largest solar array is being built on the back of the nation’s largest fossil fuel plant in the hopes to find a hybrid solution to the nation’s energy woes.

It's being dubbed the Martin Next Generation Solar Energy Center and it's being built in Indiantown, Florida by FBL. The solar array will generate 75 megawatts of power, or a less than 2% of the adjacent plant’s generating capacity. The solar power will help to supplement the energy needed, especially in the sum… Continue

Susanna, PF Web Maven Sex, Drugs and Climate Change: Global Warming Bumps Rock and Roll off list of Vices

Maryland and 14 other states have resolutions that deny the climate threat and seek to prevent limits on greenhouse gas pollution. In South Dakota yesterday, they passed a resolution “calling for a balanced approach for instruction in public schools relating to global climatic change.”

Brad Johnson of Wonk Room pulled together the resolutions, and finds language that characterizes global w… Continue

Minnesota and Iowa launched their “trade in and save” programs today, designed to encourage home owners to trade in their appliance “clunkers” for energy-star models. The program has been so successful both sites have crashed.

David Raish Solar Incentive

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a bill into law today that doubles the amount of energy power companies will be required to buy back from customers with solar panels today. That means that customers will be able to sell back up to 5% of the energy they generate, double the old rate of 2.5%.

Lauren Martens Dispatches from the "Green" Olympics...or perhaps the "GOLD!" Olympics?

When planning the 2010 Olympic games, the Vancouver Olympic Organizing Committee (VANOC) committed itself to fulfilling a "triple bottom line" - an effort to ensure that the games are not only economically sound but socially and environmentally responsible too. A tremendous amount of media coverage has been dedicated to critiquing VANOCs success in meeting their stated objective. Sure, the lack of snow is the most obvious (and most documented) hiccup but VA… Continue

Ron Nyberg Earth berming old homes and new homes save power

I do not know why we all think that we need something new to save our way of life! Our homes and business building waste power in massive amounts and there is no need for it! If we earth berm our older homes and replace windows with double pane ones in old housing we can lower the cost of heat and cooling by. around 40% and if we build new housing in earth berm style we can cut that cost by up to 60% These are not expensive things to do. Remodels like what we are doing now will pay it self ba

Lauren Martens Dispatches from the "Green" Olympics...or perhaps the "Pink" Olympics?

Much has been written about the unseasonably warm weather Vancouver has been experiencing. While it has caused much peril and pain for Olympic organizers and athletes alike, the ordinary Olympic fan couldn't ask for anything more. I can attest as a Vancouver native that there is nothing quite as spectacular as the sparkling water and glistening mountains of this city on a sunny day. With temper… Continue

David Raish Solar that may not be so green

A recent article in the Seattle PI states that a proposed solar power plant near Cle Elum in eastern Washington is suffering some significant setbacks.

There is anger from the local community that the plant, the construction of which will require countless acres of trees to be logged, hurts the environment more than it benefits it. The power plant claims it chose its… Continue

Lauren Martens Without Winter, There Can Be No Winter Games

It has been hard to escape the amount of coverage dedicated in recent weeks to Vancouver’s curious lack of snow. It seems that Vancouver is the first city in history to host the “Spring” Olympics. While Vancouver is known to be among the mildest climates in Canada, the lack of snow on the North Shore Mountains is actually highly unusual. Some media theories have claimed that Vancouver

Cliff Travis EPA wants ideas on how to improve!

Now is the time to speak on both energy and environmental issues. Federal and state institutions are listening. On FB the EPA was asking for input on how to improve in a variety of areas, from transparency to participation to collaboration. Energy-Environmental issues are so tightly connected that it is important for us to address both together. Here's your chance to get your ideas heard! I've listed my submitted ideas below as examples.

Cliff Travis Bill Gates on Climate Change & Fast Reactors

It looks like Gates is "all in" so to speak with respect to climate change. He has substantial investments in a new type of nuclear technology (that people on this website have been ranting about for about a year).

In an odd coincidence, the president recently "upped nuclear investment for climate fight."

16 miles of bike lanes will be built in the Philadelphia region using federal transportation moneys, totaling a $23 million dollar investment in bike/ped facilities in the region. This is one of the largest grants ever given to a bike/ped project in the US.

The concept requires the gas turbine to be operating at less than optimum when the sun shines - meaning it is operating out of the most efficient range at least 25% of the time. Not a great solution.
